Hilla

ABOUT THE PROJECT
Hilla is an apartment in Lviv for a couple and their two young sons. The project grew out of the family’s everyday habits: gathering around the table, spending time together, and having space for privacy.
We designed a home that accommodates each of these needs. The shared living area encourages connection, the bedroom offers a place to unwind, and the children’s room leaves plenty of space for play. Certain decisions also anticipate the family’s next stage, as the boys grow and their daily routines change.
THE BRIEF
To bring together the owners’ affinity for traditional interiors and the lightness of a contemporary home. To find a balance of materials, forms, and details that feels familiar and welcoming, with room for the family’s own story to unfold.
A full-sized dining table was an essential requirement. Sharing meals is an important part of the owners’ day, making this ritual one of the starting points for the design.
LAYOUT
In the shared living area, the dining table brings the family together. Its oval shape softens the geometry of the surrounding furniture and contributes to the relaxed atmosphere.
In the children’s room, storage for clothes and toys is integrated into the bed structures. This frees up more floor space for movement and play — the children’s main needs at this stage.
We replaced the bathtub with a spacious shower and fitted two basins into a wide vanity unit. This arrangement anticipates future school mornings, allowing the boys to get ready together without waiting their turn. For us, these everyday situations are central to what makes a home comfortable.
MATERIALS & ATMOSPHERE
Grey kitchen cabinetry, a wooden worktop, brass handles, and Windsor chairs form the foundation of the interior. Traditional silhouettes sit alongside simple contemporary forms, brought together through a restrained palette and recurring materials.
Wood adds warmth, while metal provides subtle accents. In the bathroom, white marble is paired with wood, continuing the material palette used throughout the apartment.
In the bedroom, we focused on quiet tones, textiles, and light. With fewer visual accents, attention shifts to subtle textures and a sense of comfort.
Hilla’s character emerges from these interconnected decisions. A shared table, room for children to play, an easy morning routine, and a restful bedroom create a home whose aesthetics are closely tied to the family’s everyday life.
