The owner travels frequently, loves cooking and occasionally works from home. She wanted to restore the apartment\u2019s distinctive Lviv character and introduce her favourite colour, green.<\/p>\n

One original timber window, historic joinery and a green Austrian tiled stove had survived. These elements became the starting point for a design that brings the apartment\u2019s heritage into contemporary everyday life.[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”THE BRIEF” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:24|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Poiret%20One%3Aregular|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_id=”task”][vc_column_text]Our task was to restore a sense of coherence to the apartment while adapting it to its new residents\u2019 habits and needs. This meant creating a generous kitchen for someone who loves cooking, a workspace for occasional use, practical storage and separate private rooms.<\/p>\n

We also considered the possibility of a growing family and the child\u2019s changing needs over time. The balance between shared and private spaces needed to accommodate different daily rhythms and evolving expectations of privacy.<\/p>\n

For an owner who travels frequently, the apartment was also conceived as a welcoming place to return to, with familiar materials, a personal colour palette and room for new belongings and experiences.[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”LAYOUT” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:24|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Poiret%20One%3Aregular|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_id=”planning”][vc_column_text]The main change involved relocating the kitchen and opening it up to the living room. The owner\u2019s love of cooking shaped its role as an integral part of the shared space. An island provides additional preparation space and allows her to cook while staying in conversation with family and friends. The position of the existing ducts informed the provision for kitchen extraction.<\/p>\n

A workspace was incorporated into the living room beside the bookcase. The desk extends into the windowsill, making the most of the natural light and views. It offers a comfortable place to work from home, with opportunities to look into the distance and remain connected to the city throughout the day.<\/p>\n

Separate bedrooms were provided for the owner and her child. The open kitchen and living area encourages time together, while the private rooms offer space to withdraw. This balance also anticipates changes in family life as the child grows and the need for personal space evolves.<\/p>\n

In the bathroom, the bathtub was replaced with a shower. The washing machine was concealed in a cabinet alongside storage for cleaning products and personal care essentials, freeing up the compact room while keeping everyday necessities close at hand.[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”KEY DESIGN DECISIONS” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:24|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Poiret%20One%3Aregular|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_id=”key”][vc_column_text]Our approach to the apartment\u2019s historic character began with its surviving proportions, materials and details. The sole original window became the template for new timber windows throughout. Restored window surrounds and joinery connect these new elements to the original interior.<\/p>\n

The green Austrian tiled stove guided the colour palette. Its tiles inspired the search for stone for the kitchen splashback and island. After an extensive search, we found a green onyx that creates a dialogue between the historic stove and the contemporary kitchen. Its natural veining forms a focal point visible from the living room, drawing the shared space together.<\/p>\n

In the WC, green takes on a more intimate character through patterned wallpaper, creating an enveloping atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The entrance hall establishes a warm welcome. An ochre ceiling is framed by a cornice that echoes the historic plasterwork, with soft lighting emphasising its colour. Restored doors fitted with antique Austrian brass handles complete the space, preserving the tactile details that give the apartment its sense of place.[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”IMPLEMENTATION” font_container=”tag:h2|font_size:24|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Poiret%20One%3Aregular|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” el_id=”implement”][vc_column_text]Working within the historic building required substantial technical renewal. Removing the worn flooring revealed differences in level of up to 30 centimetres. The floor base was rebuilt with reinforcement and lightweight materials to limit the additional load on the existing floor structure.<\/p>\n

All windows were replaced with new timber units, reproducing the original design using the surviving window as a reference. The original surrounds and joinery were restored and reinstalled.<\/p>\n

The Austrian tiled stove was rebuilt, its later gas burner removed and its traditional wood-burning function reinstated. These surviving features were given a renewed practical role within the home, preserving the apartment\u2019s character while supporting its next chapter.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/section>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
